I am a sneakerhead

I am a sneakerhead episode 114 - @Sneakophilo

Hi! My name is Phillip, I’m 30 years old and I live in Münster/Germany, a middle-sized town in the proximity of the Ruhr Area.

Just like many others I got into sneakers because of Michael Jordan and Basketball. When I was about 10, 11 years old a huge basketball hype broke out in Germany and I became a massive fan of MJ and the Chicago Bulls. That was around 1995/96, the time the Jordan XI was first released and of course I begged my parents to buy me that shoe. I finally got it and wore it until it fell apart.

After entering secondary school my interests changed and I lost track of Basketball and sneakers altogether. Nevertheless, I did keep a certain love for shoes and I always had above average numbers of shoes in my closet, especially since the day I entered business school and proper shoes were a means to differentiate.

It ultimately took until two years ago when, instead of pursuing a career in the business world, I started studying art history that my love for sneakers got fired up again. Since then I have been an avid collector of Puma and Asics.

What I love about sneakers is their variety: shapes, designs, colours, history, much more fun than is the case with business shoes for example. For me it’s also fun to make them part of my entire outfit, together with socks and shirts. A daily moment of creativity so to say.

As already said I’m mainly in love with Asics and Puma, in particular with the GL3, the Saga and the Blaze of Glory. They are my favourite silhouettes and I wear them on a daily basis.

I’m not the biggest buyer of collabs (although I do and did buy some) because, in contrast to many fellow sneakerheads out there, most of them don’t get to me that much. I also wouldn’t be willing to camp out for a pair of shoes or spend huge amounts on them because I am constantly balancing my budget between shoes and books, my second love in terms of collecting.

Currently I own about a hundred pairs and it’s almost impossible to choose a favorite among them. But if my house was on fire I would probably rescue my Sagas and Blaze of Glorys.
