I am a sneakerhead episode 201 - @Ahmaddanialmohammad
Hello, awesome people. My name is Ahmad Danial Mohammad (@ahmaddanialmohammad on Instagram). Born in Reno, Nevada and I have been living in Selangor, Malaysia before my recent move to Sydney, Australia.
I started putting more attention to sneakers after high school as I understand them more. While I remembered owning a Converse EV pro (if I remember correctly) as one of my first cool shoes when I was a kid, I even had a bootleg SIAM SMITH (instead of STAN SMITH) in high school, Limp Bizkit’s shelltoes, admiring the swoosh and other three stripes silhouettes.
The pair that finally got me into collecting was the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 bought by my mom as a gift for getting into university about 16-17 years ago). Star Three Sixty, Sunway Pyramid. I will never forget that. Beat it to death and eventually, I had to toss it away. That eventually led me to get more Mexico 66 pairs. I got hooked on Adidas BOOST for a bit before settling with Asics until now.
How many pairs do you currently have in your collection?
I don’t really keep count of the number of pairs because some of them come and go. Maybe 80-90 at this point (I think).
You recently moved quite far away, do you have any difficulties moving all your pairs that far?
As much as I would love to have them all with me, I decided to just keep them in storage back home. It was a good excuse to start over in a brand-new place!
When I moved here, I specifically brought 3 pairs with me:
Asics Gel-Lyte III 30th Anniversary Triple Black (a gift from Fong Chee Meng)
SneakerLAH x Hundredpercent x Asics Gel-Lyte III “Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers” (a gift from Bryan Chin and SneakerLAH family)
SneakerLAH x Hundredpercent x Asics Gel-Kayano 5 “Nasi Lemak (an assist from Bryan Chin)
My current collection is pretty much controlled as more responsibilities and commitments kick in. A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.
Have you experienced any cultural differences when it comes to sneakerheads?
Quite frankly, no. At least for me, I love the diversity and how much sneakers have grown into such an important element in streetwear these days. It’s all about keeping that positive energy, sharing the love in its most authentic way, and being genuine. When you do that, there is no validation needed as the community will see you for who you are.
On another tangent, believe that even though you do not represent any particular brand(s), knowledge and respect are important. For example, understanding why Nike and Adidas are the titans of the industry, why people go for fakes instead of authentic pairs, why high fashion brands are putting more spotlight on sneakers, and the list goes on. Knowledge is power.
Have you had a chance to catch up with any local sneakerheads yet?
Here in Sydney, I have yet to do that, really. Work and personal life have been pretty much my main focus now (Sorry, nb_titan. It’s been a long time coming for us to meet).
Hopefully, when things are more stable and manageable for me.
I have a habit of complimenting anybody that rocks a nice pair of sneakers randomly. Any time, anywhere, no matter who you are.
You seem to have a great variety of brands in your collection, do you have a favourite brand? Perhaps a favourite model?
While I had my fun with Onitsuka Tiger and Adidas for a little bit, it’s just Asics all the way now.
Can I give two models? Haha. They will have to be OG Asics Gel-Lyte III (the perfect sneaker silhouette) and Gel-1130 (it helped me A LOT during my metatarsal fracture recovery period).
Have you purchased anything in 2023 so far?
Yes, I have. Besides KITH’s Super Orange and Super Yellow, I am looking forward to HAL Studio’s 1130 “Forest” and another release that they have hopefully this year.
SneakerLAH might be cooking something too, so that’s another one that I keeping tabs on (if it’s Asics that is. Sorry, Bryan. Haha)
What is your favourite pair in your collection?
My favorite pair will be the Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel-Lyte II “Flamingo” (My daughter knows this). The shape, the colorway, the comfort, and the quality, just to name a few. *Chef’s kiss* As much as I would like to double up on that pair, the price is just too expensive now. Maybe, in the future…
